Ram Sudama
Principal Surveyor
Ram Sudama is the owner
and principal surveyor for Skye Marine Services. His ancestors were fishermen
on the Isle of Skye
off the rugged western coast of Scotland. His great-grandfather worked
in the shipyards of Belfast. His grandfather was a marine surveyor, inspecting
ships for Lloyds of London and Hartford Insurance Company, and served
as harbourmaster of the Port of Baltimore. His father was an officer in
the U.S. Navy who survived the sinking of the
USS Yorktown during
the Battle of Midway and later taught marine engineering at the U.S. Naval
Academy and the U.S. Maritime Institute.
Ram was brought up on the water. His family are natives of Annapolis,
MD - often referred to as "the sailing capital of the world". He was raised
on the Chesapeake Bay and in Bermuda. As a child he rescued, restored
and re-floated many abandoned wrecks, gaining valuable experience in boat
design, construction and repair. He was trained at the
Severn Sailing
Association in Eastport and skippered and crewed on boats of all sizes
up and down the bay. He later taught seamanship and racing technique in
Casco Bay, Maine. He has sailed extensively on the east coast from
Maine to the Bahamas, in the Pacific Northwest, as well as in New
Zealand and Australia. He lived and sailed for many years in New England, where
he first established Skye Marine Services. Ram currently lives with his
family on Vancouver Island.
